It is very easy to see how modern industry is increasingly automated. Making power quality of great importance, since having low power quality, can affect the automated processes by unexpected service interruptions and increased costs in general. It is all this that we will talk about in this post. We offer quality services for AVR distributor in Pakistan.
Importance Of Having Good Voltage Quality
Power quality is an extremely important aspect at an industrial level. On the one hand due to the benefits in terms of electricity service prices, and on the other hand because companies are increasingly sensitive to energy quality problems. A low quality of electrical energy could trigger damage and problems to the equipment, and even interrupt the production cycle.
Most Common Problems Associated with Voltage Quality
Power Quality – Voltage Variation
Under ideal circumstances, it should balance the mains voltage supply, at constant frequency and RMS (as in the figure on the left). But, in real circumstances, the voltage is never perfect (as in the figure on the right). According to the EN50160 standard, can caused these problems by many factors, below we list the most common.
Frequency Variations
As we well know, the nominal supply frequency is 60 Hz. But, beyond this, the average value of the fundamental frequency should be within the following ranges (measured over a period of 10 sec. and under normal operating conditions):
In systems without synchronized connection in interconnected systems:
60 Hz ± 2 % (ie 59 Hz… 62 Hz) for 95 % in one week.
60 Hz ± 15 % (ie 51.. Hz… 69 Hz) for 100% of the time.
In synchronized systems in interconnected systems:
60 Hz ± 1% (ie 59.4 Hz… 60.6 Hz) for 99.5% in one year.
60 Hz + 4 % / – 6 % (i.e. 57 Hz… 62 Hz) for 100% in one year.
Transient Overvoltage (Spike)
transient-overvoltage-power-quality
Usually caused by lightning or system switching, they can last from milliseconds to much less than a microsecond.
The energy content of a transient overvoltage varies according to its origin. A surge caused by switching typically has a higher energy content than a lightning-induced surge, which in turn typically has a higher amplitude.
Voltage Interruptions
interruptions-voltage-quality-voltage
Condition in which the supplied voltage is less than 5% of the reference voltage.
We can classify these types of interruptions as:
Pre-established: When informed in advance.
Accidental: When they caused by transient failures. They can be long (greater than 3min) or short (less than or equal to 3min)
For polyphase systems, a voltage outage occurs when the voltage drops below 5% of the reference voltage on all phases. Otherwise, it would be a voltage drop (dip).
Swells-Quality-Energy
It is when there is a temporary increase in the RMS voltage above the specified threshold (110% of the reference voltage). It is a two-dimensional disturbance whose level is determined by voltage and time (duration) at the same time.

Costs Associated with Poor Power Quality
Some of the costs that could result from poor power quality are:
- The Costs for damage or malfunction of machinery (repairs, temporary rentals, replacement).
- Costs of non-productive personnel due to the interruption of the production cycle.
- To discard Costs of raw material.
- Penalties for contractual breach of production.
- Sanctions for environmental damage.
- Costs for interrupted work.
- Increased insurance costs.
